There are 29 bones in your hand, along with 34 muscles which more the fingers and thumb, 17 located in the palm of the hand and 18 located in the forearm.

Finger tendon injuries are most often the result of cuts to the fingers or hand, jamming fingers in the door and sporting injuries, especially ball sports.

Extensor Tendon Injuries

Extensor tendons are on the back of the hands and fingers and straighten the wrist, fingers and thumb. Usually the tendon is torn from the bone and if not treated, it may be hard to straighten one or more of the joints in the surrounding area.

Mallet finger is a common injury involving the extensor tendon.

Flexor Tendon Injuries

Flexor tendons are the muscles that bend/flex the finger. Flexor injuries are often the result of deep cuts and the surrounding nerves and blood vessels may also be injured.

How is a tendon injury treated?

A cut tendon will require surgery.

Mr Rafael Acosta-Rojas works in conjunction with a Hand Therapist and exercise may be recommended to aid recovery.
