Understanding the Science of Skin Ageing

As we age, our skin naturally undergoes changes that result in fine lines, loss of elasticity, and dullness. While wrinkles are the most visible sign of ageing, the process goes much deeper. UV exposure, diet, stress, and lifestyle choices all play a critical role in how our skin ages. Fortunately, advances in skin science and professional treatments provide effective ways to prevent and even slow down premature ageing.

At Australian Skin Face Body (ASFB), we take a scientific, personalised approach to skin health, using the latest technology and treatments to help restore and maintain youthful, healthy skin.

The Science of Skin Ageing

Skin ageing is influenced by two primary factors:

Intrinsic Ageing (Natural Ageing): Determined by genetics and biological processes. As we age, collagen and elastin production slow, leading to loss of firmness, elasticity, and hydration. Skin also produces less oil, resulting in dryness and a dull appearance.

Extrinsic Ageing (Environmental & Lifestyle Factors): UV exposure, pollution, smoking, and diet accelerate premature ageing by breaking down collagen, increasing pigmentation, and causing inflammation.

Understanding these processes helps in selecting preventative and corrective treatments for long term skin health.

The Role of Sun Exposure in Skin Ageing

Sun exposure is the leading cause of premature skin ageing, known as photo-ageing.

UVA and UVB rays break down collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles, pigmentation, and loss of firmness. Over time, repeated exposure leads to:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles due to collagen breakdown.
  • Sunspots and pigmentation from excessive melanin production.
  • Loss of skin elasticity, leading to sagging.

“The best way to combat photo-ageing is consistent sun protection,” says Fiona Priddle, Dermal Clinician and Team Leader at ASFB.

“A broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen (preferably zinc) should be worn daily, even on cloudy days.”

How Diet, Stress & Sleep Impact Skin Health

“Lifestyle factors play a huge role in skin health. I always discuss this with patients when addressing their specific skin concerns. What we eat has a profound effect on our skin’s ability to repair and regenerate. Also, certain foods can trigger an inflammatory response in the gut, which can worsen conditions like rosacea or redness on the cheeks and nose. Stress and lack of sleep can also negatively affect the skin’s overall function and appearance. Education is key to helping patients make better choices for their skin,“ says Fiona.

A diet rich in:
✔ Vitamin C & Omega-3s – Boosts collagen synthesis and hydration.
✔ Antioxidants – Protects against environmental damage.
✔ Protein & Amino Acids – Supports skin regeneration.

Conversely, excess sugar and processed foods accelerate skin ageing through glycation, weakening collagen and elastin.

Chronic stress triggers an increase in cortisol levels, which breaks down collagen and slows healing processes in the skin. This can lead to premature wrinkles, dehydration, and inflammation. Stress is also linked to skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, and eczema. Managing stress through mindfulness, exercise, and quality sleep can significantly improve skin health.

During sleep, the skin undergoes cellular repair and regeneration. Poor sleep quality can lead to dark circles, puffiness, and a dull complexion. Prioritising 7-9 hours of sleep per night allows the skin to produce collagen and elastin effectively, keeping it firm and radiant.

OBSERV Skin Analysis – The First Step

ASFB uses OBSERV, a state-of-the-art skin analysis system, as the first step in the skin consultation.

“We really need to see what’s going on in the various layers of the skin,” explains Fiona.

“OBSERV advanced technology provides an in-depth look at skin health, analysing concerns beneath the surface that may not be visible to the naked eye.”

The experienced dermal team then tailors a personalised treatment plan to optimise your skin’s health and to address your concerns.

Common Ageing Skin Concerns

Whilst fine lines and wrinkles are the most visible sign of ageing, ASFB treats a number of concerns such as:

Acne. Quite common especially with changing hormone levels.

Pigmentation.  As we grow older, various factors can increase melanin levels, resulting in hyperpigmentation – uneven skin tone.

Age spots.  Also called liver or sunspots, commonly found on parts of the body that are frequently exposed to the sun. Whilst they are generally harmless, some dark spots may resemble melanoma, so it’s important to have a regular skin cancer check by an experienced GP.

Sensitive skin. As our skin changes, it looks and feels different and may become sensitive and prone to bruising, bleeding, redness, irritation and rashes.

Broken capillaries. Sun exposure is one of the leading culprits, however, as we age the skin naturally becomes thinner and loses elasticity.

Rosacea. One of the most common concerns we treat at ASFB. Although anyone at any age can get rosacea, it most commonly occurs in women over 50 and the severity of the skin condition tends to increase with age.

Skin laxity. As we age, our skin naturally loses its elasticity and firmness, leading to skin sagging. Areas of concern often include the jowls or cheeks, the jawline, neck and the delicate skin around the eyes – sagging eyelids and drooping brows.

Professional Treatments Skin Ageing

At ASFB, we offer advanced treatments using cutting edge technology and laser machines, specifically chosen by Plastic Surgeon Mr Ian Holten (MED0001130662), and the expert team.

The focus is on skin health.

“When your skin is healthy and glowing, imperfections are less noticeable, and confidence naturally improves. For example, when a patient is dealing with rosacea, the excess blood supply to the skin causes inflammation, sensitivity, and other issues like visible pores or thickened skin. By treating the vascular network through a combination of skincare and in-clinic treatments, we can normalise skin function and bring back that healthy glow, “says Fiona

Medical Grade Treatments could include a combination of:

Medical grade chemical peels using exfoliating acids to stimulate cell turnover, revealing smoother, more radiant skin. These peels of varying strengths, help with pigmentation, fine lines, and uneven texture while boosting hydration and collagen production.

Laser Treatments, such as the PICO Genesis Laser, a breakthrough treatment that targets pigmentation, sun damage, and uneven skin tone without damaging the surrounding tissue. It works by delivering ultra-short pulses of energy, stimulating collagen production and skin renewal.

Potenza RF Microneedling combines radiofrequency technology with microneedles to deeply penetrate the skin, stimulating collagen production and skin tightening. This treatment is excellent for firming sagging skin, reducing wrinkles, and improving overall skin texture.

CoolPeel, a no downtime skin resurfacing treatment, assisting in brightening and lightening the skin, reducing uneven skin tone.

Ultraformer MPT, (available at ASFB Geelong only), is an advanced non-surgical skin tightening treatment that delivers ultrasound energy deep into the skin, stimulating collagen for a firmer, lifted appearance. Results are long-lasting, with improvements visible for up to a year.

To treat redness, vascular lasers, such as the excel® V+ laser works by administering a unique high power green laser that is absorbed by the abnormal blood vessels in the skin. The laser heats the abnormal vessels causing the vein walls to collapse and seal shut.

ASFB’s dermal team is highly trained in medical grade treatments and with so many options available, treatments are tailored to your needs – it is not a “one solution fits all” approach.

Investing in Active Ingredients Skincare

Skincare products containing active ingredients like retinol, niacinamide, Vitamin C, AHAs, Ceramides, and hyaluronic acid help improve skin texture, hydration, and elasticity.

Active ingredients appear in skin care products in varying dosage forms and potency.

ASFB recommends RATIONALE and the team can help customise your optimum at home ritual. RATIONALE skincare can be purchased online at ASFB.

Invest in Long Term Skin Health

Skin ageing is a complex process, but with the right medical grade treatments, skincare, and lifestyle habits, it’s possible to maintain healthy skin at any age and even slow down premature ageing. But consistency is the key.

“Your skin’s needs will change over time, but staying committed to a consistent skincare routine and treatments will deliver the best results,” says Fiona.

At ASFB, our expert team is dedicated to helping you understand your skin and creating customised treatment plans tailored to your unique concerns.
