Skincare: how to invest in the future ‘you’
We’ve complied a handy little reference on how to invest in the future ‘you’ each decade of your life.
Our skin works extremely hard. Its surface layer is a bit like a superhero, protecting us from germs and toxic substances. That’s why it needs our respect and TLC (more than a quick once over with a baby wipe) to keep us looking our best throughout all the decades of our life.
Whatever your age, it’s never too late to invest in your future skin. At Australian Skin Face Body, we offer a range of skin treatments, such as medical-grade chemical skin peels and laser treatments, to combat premature ageing at any stage of your life. Many of our treatments are suitable for all ages.
Our skin is made up of three layers:
- epidermis: surface layer
- dermis: ‘living layer’ where collagen and elastin exist
- hypodermis: circulatory and fat layer
Skin ageing is a gradual process, a combination of our genetics, lifestyle, diet and environment. Our skin’s natural ageing process normally begins in our mid 20s as production of collagen (makes skin strong and firm) and elastin (provides softness and elasticity to) slows. Dead skin cells shed more slowly and the turnover of new skin decreases between the age of 20 and 60.
Signs of skin ageing are most pronounced in areas most exposed to the sun, such as our face, neck, décolletage and the backs of our hands. Here the skin first thins, loses volume and elasticity and becomes dull, and fine lines morph into deeper wrinkles. Excess pigment (blotchy brown spots) and blemishes also give the appearance of increasing age. But it’s not only the natural ageing process that affects our skin’s health and appearance. UV exposure from the sun is a major factor causing our skin to appear older prematurely. Sun damage may also cause changes to the skin’s immune functioning that may lead to skin cancer.
At Australian Skin Face Body, we believe in giving you easy access to products and treatments backed by science. Our dermal team has sourced the best available active ingredients and treatments to help keep your skin in tip-top shape and to prevent premature ageing. Our knockout tip to keep your skin looking youthful longer is: when outdoors use SPF 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen religiously and wear protective clothing including a hat and UV protective sunglasses. It’s that simple!
Here are some other tips to keep your skin looking and feeling its best each decade of your life:
Skin in your 20’s
The issues
This is the time to invest in our future skin; it’s the decade to ramp up preventative care. Invest in cosmeceutical skincare products suitable for your age and skin type. Cosmeceuticals contain active ingredients that affect skin cell function. Our dermal consultants can work out a skincare routine to suit your skin and budget.
Bang-for-your-buck treatments
- Gentle medical-grade chemical peels at ASFB are a fabulous skin rejuvenation treatment. By lifting the top layer of damaged skin cells, skin peels may smooth away fine lines, wrinkles and blemishes and improve the overall appearance and condition of the skin. You may notice some temporary tingling when the chemical is applied but it shouldn’t be uncomfortable. As the treatment is very superficial, it’s unlikely your skin will peel in the days following the treatment.
- PICO Genesis Enlighten III photo-rejuvenation treatment helps eliminate uneven pigment while brightening and smoothing out our complexion. It suits all skin types.
- A popular HydraFacial deeply cleans, exfoliates and quenches thirsty skin leaving it fresh and clean.
Kick-ass cosmeceutical ingredients
- Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects collagen and fights free-radical damage to healthy cells. Free radicals are unstable, reactive molecules that are a main culprit in rapid ageing.
Skin in your 30’s
The issues
In our thirties we may notice fine lines and wrinkles appearing, particularly around our eyes. Slower cell turnover means dead skin cells tend to remain on our face when they die, causing our complexion to look flaky and dull. Hormonal changes during pregnancy and some birth-control medications may cause melasma, brown patches on the skin.
Bang-for-your-buck treatments
- Injectables reduce the appearance of fine lines and can help stop these lines from developing further. Injectables work by relaxing facial muscles that form dynamic lines when you smile or frown. Ideal for forehead lines and crow’s feet.
- PICO Genesis Enlighten III photo-rejuvenation treatment helps eliminate uneven pigment while brightening and smoothing out our complexion. It suits all skin types and improves skin texture and tone.
- A HydraFacial deeply cleans, exfoliates and quenches thirsty skin leaving it fresh and clean.

Retinol, a concentrated form of Vitamin A, is a beauty powerhouse to regain balance in your 30s. It stimulates collagen and elastin production, helps even out pigment and treats and helps prevent wrinkles.
Also, don’t forget Vitamin B, also known as niacinamide, reduces inflammation, increases hydration and neutralises oil production.
Skin in your 40’s
The issues
By our fabulous 40s, the skin turnaround rate on our face has slowed considerably. Unfortunately this means we are now more susceptible to blotchy pigmentation, wrinkles and scarring.
Bang-for-your-buck treatments
- Dermal fillers to plump up volume and reduce lines and wrinkles to gain a more even appearance.
- ASFB Signature Package is a great all-rounder that includes a gentle medical-grade skin peel, gentle ND:Yag Laser Treatment to stimulate collagen production and relaxing Light Emitting Diode (LED) therapy that goes deeper to hydrate your skin.

Antioxidants are our ‘besties’ this decade, they are our ‘wrinkle warriors’, a key form of protection helping to retain our skin’s collagen levels and to prevent damage from free-radicals that leads to pigmentation and wrinkles.
Skin in your 50’s
The issues
As our face muscles reduce in size and our bones slowly shrink, we may notice changes in the structure of our face – less volume in our cheeks and looser skin. There are deeper wrinkles around our eyes and mouth. Moisture is also a key focus in our 50s as we embrace richer, more concentrated formulas that will plump our skin with moisture and nutrients.
Bang-for-your-buck treatments
- Fractional CO2 laser DOT Lite therapy reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and can refine enlarged pores, treat pigmentation, sun spots and softly tighten the skin.
- Known for its precision performance and ability to safely and effectively treat challenging vascular and pigmentary conditions, the excel® V+ can treat common skin concerns, including age spots, open pores, facial veins, acne scars and rosacea.
- Micro needling is a great way to stimulate collagen production. INFINI is a non-surgical skin tightening system that targets fine lines and wrinkles by resurfacing the skin to improve tone and texture.
- Medical Grade Chemical skin peels can be tailored just for you. Deep exfoliating TCA peels are more potent than salicylic or glycolic acid peels and can affect two layers of the skin, the epidermis, and the dermis.can be good at minimising the appearance of pores and uneven texture, reducing hyperpigmentation, and stimulating new collagen production to smooth fine lines and wrinkles.

Peptides are large molecules that help hydrate the tissues in your face. Consider inviting these fun-loving peptides to your party this decade. Also worth checking out is the Empelle range with exclusive MEP Technology to help rejuvenate, restore and rebalance skin affected by menopause.
Skin in your 60’s +
The issues
In our sixties and beyond, the focus is on keeping our skin hydrated and strong. Thin, weak skin tears and bruises more easily. As our natural ceramide levels reduce with normal ageing, our skin barrier may become more prone to redness, broken capillaries, dryness and skin irritation. And the loss of fat below the skin in our cheeks, chin, temples, nose, and around our eyes may cause our skin to become more lax.
